Millwork Mecca in Cobble Hill Charmer

Originally designed in 2004 as a bed and breakfast, this Cobble Hill home is nestled amongst the trees with stunning views its own private lake. For interior designer Eli Nanos at Ivyhouse Design, the goal of the 330-square foot kitchen redesign was to invite a coastal Cape Cod feel by opening up the kitchen and dining area to create an airy open concept with timeless elements.

“When we took out the huge hallway in between the dining room and kitchen, we were able to make the kitchen the hub of the home,” says Nanos, who point out that ironically, the kitchen is literally in the centre of the home’s figure-eight layout.

As a nod to the Cape Cod theme, impressive millwork by David Sheridan from Splinters Millworks takes centre stage and includes custom-built cabinetry, two working islands, corbels on the hood vent, a walk-in pantry, and an impressive barrel vault archway designed by Nanos. Sheridan states that “the curved archway was a challenge; we had to use a vacuum press to form the panels into the curve and steam bend the stile and rails.”

The owner’s passion for cooking inspired Nanos to create a professional grade kitchen centred around two islands, a functional work triangle, and top-of-the-line appliances. Bright white quartz on all the countertops reflect an abundance of natural light around the room.

Careful consideration was given to the kitchen’s work flow starting with the relationship between the appliances and circulation space connecting distinct workspaces: the bar/beverage area with a Sub-Zero double-height wine fridge, a cooking zone with double wall ovens and cooktop, and a designated clean up space. “A significant amount of thought was put into creating these separate zones, explains Nanos, that would support an efficient sense of flow when multiple dishes are being prepared, drinks are being served, and guests are moving around.”

Centred on luxurious finishing and striking millwork, the home’s sophisticated East Coast style harmonizes with the comforting coastal elements to exude a timeless appeal while accommodating relaxed family life. Splinters exceeded the owners’ expectations with meticulous millwork that elevates the kitchen’s livability and allows the family to cook and entertain with ease.
