Master Ensuite Renovation Captures Sea Views

Like the old adage says, you don’t need a lot of clients, just happy ones. Which explains why this retired couple hired MAC Renovations for a second time when they were ready to renovate their master ensuite. After previously working with this Cordova Bay couple to update their 1980’s waterfront townhome, on the former site of the renowned Fabled Cottage, Terri Wills, designer at MAC Reno was ready to tackle an ensuite refresh. For these homeowners with an appetite for quality materials and a no-nonsense design sense, their vision was to create an airy and bright 150 square feet that would allow the expansive sea views to sing.

“The first challenge I noted about the original ensuite was that when the door was open from the bedroom, all you could see was the toilet. The shower stall was small with tracks that were difficult to clean. Once inside the shower, the soap shelf protruded into the space making showering quite uncomfortable. Although it wasn’t a primary design goal, we did include some aspects of aging-in-place like a low threshold shower and backing for future grab bars,” says Wills.

Like a lot 1980’s ensuites, the original layout centred around a built-in tub that was awkward to get in and out of. In order to transform the focal point and allow the ocean views to take centre stage, the designer chose materials that would support a clean streamlined look. Maple shaker style cabinetry maintains the traditional feel of the home while the Cloud White paint keeps the space breezy and visually light. White Pental BQ900 Cashmere Quartz countertops are durable and add a modern touch. Practical details in the vanity include dual sinks, built-in soap dispensers and two triple-flex mirrored medicine cabinets.

Experiencing a Victoria and Albert Mozzano tub in a hotel on their travels, the couple wanted to bring the tub’s strong architectural presence to their new ensuite. Wills angled the Mozzano tub to create enough breathable space around the vanity while letting the tub’s soft curves offset the hard durable surfaces. Now the tub is in the sight lines from the master bedroom rather than the toilet. The shower stall, vanity faucets and tub filler are from the Kontour Collection by Kalia.

This ensuite is the perfect example of the fact that you don’t need glitz and glam to attain luxury. The timeless materials in neutral tones will stand the test of time in durability and style. The wavy matte tile behind the tub echoes the stretch of sea just beyond the ensuite windows. Heated floors are a welcomed addition when the winter months turn cloudy and cold.
