A sleek, industrial vibe accentuates this West Coast modern home, designed by Rus Collins of Zebra Design and built by Rob Mickelberry of Prodigy Development Services. Every detail is tailored to the lifestyle of the owner, a retired marine pilot, whose lifetime working aboard ships is reflected in the sparse, clean lines and nautical finishes throughout the house.

In the kitchen, stainless steel countertops, backsplash and baseboards complement the black quartz island and cabinetry, which also hides the drawer fridge and dishwasher for a clean look. The cedar bar, built by the homeowner, separates the kitchen and living room, adding visual warmth and textural appeal to the concrete floors and tiled fireplace.

Solid fir stair treads and handrails echo the touch of West Coast warmth in the staircase, which leads to private living spaces on the upper floor. Here, the master bedroom features a small balcony, with a stairway leading to the rooftop patio. The homeowner can enjoy ocean views while the grass planting screens out the road below and creates privacy. To extend enjoyable rooftop evenings, a gas fireplace has been installed.

The upper floor also features a beautiful floating wood cabinet that houses the owner’s collection of maps, and a walk-in closet accentuated with wood and stainless finishes. The master bathroom is sparse, sleek and masculine, with rectangular lines repeated in the windows, hardware, tiling, vanity and the shape of the room itself. The open shower, tub and floating commode capture that industrial, modern vibe that reflects the essence of the home.

On the lower level, the homeowner can relax, exercise and entertain in a space designed around a pool table, stainless steel bar and TRX suspension training wall. Stainless steel baseboards, cool concrete floors and clean lines create a contemporary space with a minimalist approach to colour and style.
