Interview with Brooke Hatfield

Your designs always exude a feeling and a strong sense of place. Why is it important to you to create a mood and how do you do that? My goal is for my clients to feel the most at home in their own space. We each respond to our surroundings differently; what works for one person may not work for someone else. I like my projects to feel comfortable, timeless and a true reflection of my clients’ lifestyle. Adding bold colour might be important for one person while incorporating a special family heirloom might be a priority for another. Bringing in family photos might be a consideration for a client and another might want original art. I strive for each project to be as unique as the homeowner.

What’s your best advice before starting a renovation? My absolute best advice before starting a renovation is to plan!  The more detailed the advance planning, the better the project will flow. Each renovation has unique situations and issues that arise so the more prepared one is with the major decisions the easier it will be to make the smaller decisions along the way. It is easier on the homeowners and the whole team if a project is well thought out ahead of time.

What are you currently working on? Most of my projects are renovations at the moment. I absolutely love taking an older home that needs some TLC and breathing new life into it. I like to look at the character of the home and see where we can preserve some of the history while bringing it up to the lifestyle of 2021. One of my projects right now is at the planning stages of a large renovation of a midcentury home. I am really enjoying coming up with a design that stays true to the architecture of the existing home and incorporating lighting, millwork, and other finishes to complement the original style. I’m really excited about this reno!
